Intern Diary: Cassandra

Looking back on the time I have spent during my internship with JMG PR, I realize how much I have learned and how much my life has changed. When I first started back in June, I knew I was interested in the world of media and communications, but the goal was to ensure that Public Relations was the career for me by exploring the field and its various facets. When I first applied and received acceptance into the position, I had a basic understanding of what the job entailed. I understood that a Public Relations internship involved managing the public image of clients, and my job description outlined tasks such as media list research and development, PR reporting, and pitch writing. Little did I know that such simple descriptions and seemingly straightforward tasks were describing an experience that would mean so much more.

So many little details and efforts go into the day-to-day tasks. For instance, the process of media list building is not just about collecting contact information but about finding the right journalists and media outlets that match the target audience for our clients’ messages. Additionally, PR reporting and pitch writing require deeper analytical approach and strategic thinking to craft compelling narratives and ideas that resonate with readers. Learning how to perform these tasks has helped me understand what Public Relations is truly about and gain a deeper appreciation for the wonderful women who work at JMG. I am especially in awe of my Account Executives, Cara and Ryleigh, as I was reminded of their knowledge and hard work each time I approached them with questions regarding something I was confused about. They provide their explanations and advice with such ease that I often left the conversation wondering why I was so confused in the first place.

Beyond the learning experience, the relationship-building at JMG remains a highlight for which I will always be grateful. Coming into a professional environment, I was unsure about the executives’ approach to relationships within the JMG community, especially due to the remote aspect of JMG. So, when I heard about the daily “Sip-the-tea” chats, I was immediately thrilled because I knew it would be a fun break in between the workday. I was also impressed by how much Jenna and the executives value their work friendships. Through these daily meetings, I was able to get to know the interns and executives as people, not just coworkers. I learned so much about their interests, which reflect the unique opinions and ideas that shape who they are. While we usually discussed light-hearted gossip, there were times when we delved into genuine conversations about our favorite movies/TV shows or interesting stories about our experiences.

All in all, I am truly grateful for my time at JMG PR. I realize now how much I needed to go through this experience in order to further my professional development. This experience has been invaluable, providing me with mentorship from Cara and Ryleigh, whose comforting faces I continuously looked forward to seeing in morning Zoom meetings and Sip the Tea chats, a wonderful introduction to team bonding in a professional environment, and a clear understanding of what PR is truly all about. Thank you Jenna for entrusting me with this position, Cara and Ryleigh for providing me with guidance and understanding, and the rest of the beautiful JMG community for helping me enjoy my time here!
