Intern Diaries: Madeline N.

Throughout my college career, it has always been my goal to take advantage of every possible opportunity that came my way. It was a big reason that I knew I wanted to move to New York City to be able to have experiences and opportunities I wouldn’t otherwise be exposed to.

When I began college I had no idea what I wanted to do as a career path, not to mention what I wanted to establish as my major. When trying to decide, I examined my interests and skills. I have always enjoyed reading, writing, and public speaking. I enjoy learning new things and have always felt comfortable working with diverse groups of people. I chose to become a Communications Major because it was such a broad field that spoke to so many of my skills and interests. I reasoned that I could always figure out what I wanted to do in life at a later date.

Going into my senior year of college, I was interested in a career in Public Relations. I spent the summer researching Public Relations firms in New York and hunting for internship opportunities. It was just my luck when JMG posted on Instagram calling for new interns. I quickly sent in my resume and cover letter and eagerly awaited a reply. As I waited, I read the #SecretLifeofAPRGirl blog by CEO Jenna Guarneri. I almost couldn’t believe it when I was offered the Fall internship position and would get to be a PR girl myself!

Although I was nervous when I first began, Jenna and the rest of the team helped set me at ease by walking me through projects and assignments. Soon, I learned how to work independently while still feeling like I could reach out for help if I needed it. I became fast friends with my fellow intern, Michelle, and would coordinate with her on daily tasks. I loved walking into work every day having an idea of what I would be doing, but also knowing that I could be completely surprised. One day I walked in and was quickly whisked away to a meeting uptown to meet a client. I also had the amazing opportunity to help assist with a client event on my birthday!

It was nice getting a taste of what post-grad life would consist of. Everyday when I would take the subway to work or eat lunch by the water I felt like a “real adult” and could imagine myself pursuing this after graduation. Nothing felt better than seeing my hard work pay off or being able to offer my creative ideas to assist with a client's PR needs. Interning at JMG has helped me learn what Public Relations truly consists of more than I could have learned in class. It has also helped me reaffirm that deciding to be a Communications Major was the right choice for what I want to do in life.

I’m so thankful to JMG for this opportunity!
