Intern Diary: Leean

Toward the end of this Fall Semester, I felt motivated in my pursuit of an internship. Despite relentlessly applying and editing my résumé on LinkedIn, I faced difficulties in finding companies that stood out or felt like a match with me. I then remembered when I had read the “You Need PR” book by Jenna. Simply out of curiosity, I looked up JMG PR on Instagram as I had never really considered looking up using the platform before.

I stumbled upon one of JMG's posts and was immediately intrigued by their content. Typically, marketing posts seemed so bland or corporate, but with JMG, I immediately loved the creativity and felt connected without even meeting the team yet. I saw a post looking for interns and I immediately applied to all the positions that interested me. On my first day, I felt somewhat nervous, and wanted to go above and beyond to fully immerse myself in the opportunity. My jitters quickly went away, thanks to Kristen, my amazing Account Executive. Kristen was always there to answer any questions I had (and reminded me no question was a silly question) and made me feel welcome. The orientation days created a sense of community amongst the intern, assuring we were in this together and we could learn from each other’s questions.

Among the highlights of my internship, I particularly enjoyed engaging in media sweeps and constructing media lists for clients. This experience provided a glimpse into the behind-the-scenes of PR operations, which I had dabbled in, in previous internships but the structure I received here took me to another level. Seeing our clients secure coverage from some of the most prominent publications in media and realizing that I played a role in facilitating it was an immensely gratifying feeling. The variety of tasks, from press clippings or brainstorming sessions allowed me to develop a diverse skill set that I will be able to build on in future jobs.

I am proud of myself for successfully completing my spring semester internship because it has taught me the invaluable skills of time prioritization and the ability to manage multiple activities simultaneously. During my time at JMG, I gained insights into both my strengths and weaknesses through hands-on practice. This recognition provided me with the chance to improve and aspire to continue growing in these areas. From day one, the JMG team has treated me with kindness and respect, emphasizing a strong sense of community. Kristen’s mentorship played a pivotal role in boosting my confidence and shaping my professional goals.

I would like to express my gratitude to Jenna Guarneri and the entire JMG team for providing an amazing internship experience that I will always remember as I embark on my future endeavors. I am so thankful for all the wisdom, experience, and advice I have gained this Spring!
