Intern Diary: Olivia

During my freshman year of college, I noticed an Instagram follower notification from Jenna Guarneri - the CEO of JMG PR. I started to follow JMG’s Instagram soon after and occasionally interacted with their fun Instagram stories and watched their intern reels. During my spring semester as a junior while studying abroad in Florence, Italy, I was also applying for internships when I returned home to the states. I ended up googling JMG on a whim and submitted my resume.

I think it was about a week later that I received an email to schedule an interview with Jenna. The interview went well but I was also kinda nervous because it was like a full circle moment from freshman year up to actually meeting and chatting with Jenna. Flash forward, I am now writing this diary as my summer internship comes to an end with JMG PR.

In my first week I was nervous but excited, I didn’t know what to expect or how successful I’d be working remotely. Thanks to my supervisor Arcely, I think I received a fair share of experience with social media, writing, and pitching. Arcely was very straightforward and helped me ease into the process smoothly. She planned tasks for me to follow hourly and explained my tasks with clear direction. I really enjoyed working on the Brooklyn MLS Instagram and learning how to manage the analytics and posts. My favorite part was planning the giveaways and taking the time to search for pretty pictures to help promote Brooklyn. I also enjoyed pitching. Sometimes I struggled with coming up with creative captions; Arcely was always quick and witty with them, I hope to one day be a natural like her.

Another favorite part of my day was “Sip the Tea'' with the whole team and other interns. We would talk about the latest celebrity/influencer gossip and pop culture trends. Sometimes we would talk about tv shows - something I never give myself enough time for, but now I have a list of shows I shall try and watch. This hasn’t happened just yet but I am looking forward to the La La Land Sip the Tea on Wednesday, since I have a lot to say about it because it’s one of my favorite movies.

At JMG PR, the whole team is supportive and wants to help us professionally grow. They are passionate about their careers and obviously care deeply about their employees and clients. Plus, although this internship was remote, it’s nice to know Jenna and the team bond over staff retreats and are unified. All the experience I earned assures me that I chose the right path to pursue a career in public relations. I am thankful for all the experience and guidance this team has given me throughout.
