Intern Diaries: Allie G.

The latter part of last year I was spending a lot of time contemplating the inevitable; I was due to graduate in 6 months and I still had no idea where to begin looking for jobs. Though it’s not easy to decide where you want to go in life, the first step seemed like the hardest for me. Sooner or later I knew I had to face the daunting question: what career do I envision myself excelling at?

One November morning I woke up to a new follower on Instagram, JMG Public Relations. I remember scrolling through their page, taking particular notice to the cohesiveness their social media appearance was. I saw posts of client testimonials, pictures from events, blog posts about working in PR and completely fell in love with their brand. I remember thinking, “I have to work here.” One special part of the page that caught my eye was the location: New York, New York. Immediately, I followed back and did something I am not too familiar with: I slid in the DM’s.

My message was something along the lines of “I am very interested in working at this company, the way your brand is represented is drawing me to become involved, here is my resume and cover letter, please let me know if there are any openings in the future.” The response back was nicer than I could’ve anticipated, and that was all the reassurance I needed to feel a sigh of relief from knocking one of my job applications down.

A few weeks go by and I received an email that said JMG PR had requested an interview with me. We set the interview date for a few days into January, then all of a sudden my life had taken that first step; I was offered an internship for the Summer with JMG. The joy overcame me and suddenly turned into tears, I felt like I had accomplished something for the first time on my own. I was proud, I was happy.

Let me mention that New York was never in my plans. When I thought about my first job after Baylor, I wasn’t even considering moving out of Texas. I had only visited New York twice before with my family. Even though I am a small-town Texas girl, I always knew the ‘big city’ associated more with my identity. New York was the best thing I could do for myself and my career.

When I was in undergrad I knew I would be able to work well with the Journalism/PR industry. After all, I liked writing and building relationships with people. I would be lying if I said I was 100% sure I would do well in this profession. However, my first step into real world PR over-exceeded my expectations. JMG gave me so many opportunities to develop myself as a PR Professional; I was able to jump in and work hands-on with clients and see the ‘behind the scenes’ of lifestyle/entertainment PR. With this being my first job, I was so impressed with being able to meet and work with incredible people. Now more than ever, I feel confident that this is the profession I was meant to work in.

I want to thank Jenna, the CEO & President of JMG for being encouraging, supportive and for guiding me through my role as an intern. Thank you, Jenna for teaching me important skill sets that I will carry with me throughout my career. It has been a true honor working for you and your company.

I came into New York a scared, lost, but hopeful girl and I am leaving a confident, self-assured PR professional. New York helped me define who I am and who I have always wanted to become. Thank you, New York. Thank you, JMG PR.
