There are not enough words to express how grateful I am for the experiences I got from interning at JMG Public Relations. My school doesn’t offer a PR major, so coming in I was clueless. My first day, Jenna asked me to do a mockup and I had no idea what that even was or where to start. Lucky for me, I was the last of the summer interns to arrive, so I had two amazing women to guide me through it. It’s funny looking back because that mockup took me 4 hours and now a mockup like that could get done in less than 30 minutes. Jenna was so patient with the learning curve and constantly assigned me new tasks that I could grow from and also expand the skills I had.

Something that makes JMG so unique is the trust Jenna has for the interns. I wrote pitches start to finish and then sent them out myself and there is nothing more rewarding than getting an email back that a journalist or reporter wants to do a story on your client. I explored the Financial District taking pictures for our social media to then edit and write captions for. I got to experience real, hands-on PR work. There was nothing pretend about the work I did. Everything had a purpose, everything went out. Nothing was busy work and that’s how I was able to learn and grow so much this summer.

The best part of my internship experience was how inspiring every member of the team was. There was never an “I can’t do this” mindset and that made every goal we had obtainable. We all meshed together for one common goal: to do the best work for our clients. I truly believe that we did that this summer.

My biggest advice for anyone starting an internship would be to ask questions and take on responsibilities. The more you can do, the more you can learn. With an internship at JMG under my belt, I am now a stronger, smarter, more capable women that I was before.
